Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I find Wellers Rock?
At 821 Harrington Point Road, on the Otago Peninsula, approximately a 45 minute drive from Dunedin city. Co-ordinates are 45º 47.826 South, 170º 42.948 East. For more information, see the description for our One Hour Wildlife Cruise in the Wildlife Tours section.
2. Where is your office in the city?
At 20 Fryatt Street, Dunedin. 45º 52.771 South, 170º 30.429 East
3. Will it be rough?
Normally only if there is a strong north easterly wind against an outgoing tide!
4. Will it be cold?
Probably, and that is why we supply jackets. A wet, windy day can often mean great viewing, as that is the weather the wildlife love the best. They go to sleep in the heat and the sun?
5. What is the best time of the year to see Albatross?
We are lucky to have viewing all year round. Sometimes flying overhead; flying with the boat; landing beside us on the water. Adult birds and chicks on the headland, juvenile birds, birds mating and courting, re-establishing relationships!
6. Are the tours suitable for people with limited mobility?
The One Hour Wildlife Cruise as well as the Otago Peninsula Wildlife Tour are available for people with limited mobility. As there is some walking involved at the Penguin Place, though, our Otago Peninsula Wildlife Tour with Penguins as well as the Full Day Packages, are less suitable for people with limited mobility.
7. Will I see Penguins
Yes on our Half Day and Full Day tour options, these tours include the Yellow Eyed Penguin Reserve, Penguin Place
8. when are the penguins there
They are there all year round, the Yellow Eyed Penguins nest from early September and are in the reserve all day until late March when the chicks leave the nest. Viewing from April to August is best from mid afternoon. Our winter timetable includes a 3.45pm tour at Penguin Place.
9. Will we see sharks?
Yes occasionaly we see sharks.
10. What's the maximum age for a child?
Child is 5 to 15yrs (under 5 free)

Sometimes we are lucky enough to see them on our cruises.
13. Is there a shuttle service or alike from town to Wellers Rock?
No sorry there is no public transport out to Wellers Rock, own transport required. Thanks
14. We would like to see the Penguins, but it sounds like Nov. 12 is not the season they are viewable. True? Please explain the sameness or difference between viewing the penguins on the half day tour and viewing them on the "add penguins to your tour" which costs $50 more. We are ready to buy as soon as we know if the half day tour is the same penguin experience (FAQ # 7 and 8). Thanks, John McFadden
The Penguins nest from early September till late March, this means during November they will be in the reserve all day and able to be viewed. The basic half day tour does not include the guided tour of the Yellow Eyed Penguin Reserve at Penguin Place. This is an additional tour option which is why the prices are different.
15. how young can children be
Children are from age 5 to 15 years old. Children under 5 are free.
