KIA ORA, WELCOME TO Ōtepoti
haere mai - bienvenue - huānyíng - WILLKOMEN - BIENVENIDO
Welcome to Dunedin (Ōtepoti). We are a ‘small’, multi-cultural city, brimming with history and friendly people (approx. 120,000).
The area has been inhabited since the 16th century, originally by different groups of Maori. The first Europeans, including Lieutenant James Cook sailed by in 1770. He noted an abundance of seals and penguins in the area. The city of Dunedin was formally founded by the Free Church of Scotland in 1848.
A goldrush began in the 1860’s and brought wealth and growth to the ‘Edinburgh of the South’. It soon became an important port of call
for merchant ships and Antarctic exploration teams. These day’s the city is now best known for education and tourism.
We highly recommend allowing yourself time to explore the central city, it’s very accessible for both vehicles and pedestrians. You won’t need to travel far to see historic buildings, incredible street art and museums. Visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to dining out; the restaurant/cafe/brewery scene is thriving and exciting new food trucks are popping up everywhere. For more ideas click here.
